Four University students, driver die in governor’s convoy crash

Four students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, and a driver attached to the Government House have been killed in a fatal road crash involving Governor Mohammed Bago’s convoy.
The accident occurred on Monday at Gidan Kwanu, Minna, when a Toyota Hilux carrying the Director-General of the Government House, Dauda Chikuba, collided head-on with a vehicle conveying the students.
The students were reportedly travelling towards Bida, while the governor’s entourage was returning to Minna after a condolence visit to the Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, over the death of Sagi Nupe, Hajia Aisha.
Four of the five students and the driver of the Government House vehicle reportedly died at the scene, while Chikuba was rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
An eyewitness said the crash was severe, alleging that the governor’s convoy was travelling at high speed when the collision occurred.
“It was a head-on collision. We learnt that the convoy was at high speed when the accident occurred. It was a terrible accident,” the eyewitness said.
The witness added that the injured government official was taken to a hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated from the scene.
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, saying the police had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The accident occurred this morning, and we are investigating it,” Abiodun said, adding that the identities of the victims had yet to be officially disclosed.
