The Ondo State Government has commenced the removal of old water pipes, with the intention of relaying decades of expired water pipes along Ondo Road, from the Owena Dam to Akure, in a bid to overhaul the state’s aging water infrastructure.

The pipes, first laid during the administration of the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, have served the state for over six decades.
The ongoing exercise is being carried out through the Ondo State Water Board. An official of the Board who confirmed the development said the project is aimed at replacing the dilapidated network to improve water supply to Akure and its environs.
The official, however, noted that he was not authorized to speak further on the matter.

The exercise has led to the displacement of several roadside traders who operate along the Ondo Road corridor. Some of the affected traders told our reporter that they received little or no prior notice, before heavy equipment moved in, to clear the right of way.
“We have been selling here for over 12 years, nobody told us when they would start breaking the road, now we have nowhere to go,” one trader said.

When contacted, officials of the Ondo State Water Board said arrangements were being made to minimize disruption to residents and their businesses.
They added that once completed, the upgraded pipeline will deliver a more reliable and consistent water supply to the state capital.

The Owena Dam remains the major source of treated water for Akure and it’s surrounding communities, through the Water Board Corporation.
