The Ondo State Police Command has reassured residents of the state that there is no cause for panic as it commences weapon proficiency shooting exercise for police constables serving in the command.

The exercise, scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Police Shooting Range, Shasha, Akure, is part of the command’s ongoing comprehensive training programme aimed at improving officers’ skills in the safe handling, use and maintenance of firearms.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ondo State Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command said the training was designed to strengthen weapon handling skills, marksmanship, tactical response and strict compliance with the Force’s Standard Operating Procedures on the use of firearms.
The command explained that the exercise was in line with global best practices in policing and was aimed at ensuring that officers are properly trained and equipped to carry out their constitutional duties effectively while maintaining professionalism and respect for human rights.
The police urged members of the public, particularly residents around Shasha and its environs, not to be alarmed by possible sounds of gunshots during the exercise, stressing that such sounds would only be from the scheduled training activities at the shooting range.
“The Ondo State Police Command wishes to assure residents that the gunshots that may be heard within and around the vicinity of the shooting range are strictly part of the scheduled training exercise. Members of the public are therefore advised not to panic, as there is no cause for alarm,” the statement said.
The command further advised residents, commuters and other road users to avoid the immediate surroundings of the Police Shooting Range throughout the duration of the exercise for safety reasons.
According to the police, the precautionary measure is necessary to guarantee public safety and ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the training.
The command appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the people of Ondo State, reaffirming its commitment to building a highly professional, well-trained and service-oriented police force capable of protecting lives and property.
