Former Arsenal and Austria goalkeeper Alex Manninger has tragically died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train near Salzburg. The incident occurred at approximately 08:20 local time (07:20 BST) at a level crossing, according to local police.

Salzburg authorities reported that first responders used a defibrillator on Manninger, who was alone in the vehicle, but he could not be resuscitated. The train driver was unharmed.
Manninger enjoyed a distinguished career, making 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and FA Cup. He also earned 33 caps for Austria, participating in Euro 2008, hosted by his home country.
“Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch,” said Peter Schöttel, sporting director of the Austrian Football Association.
“His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national squad. His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable.”
Manninger began his career at Red Bull Salzburg and played for 14 clubs across Europe, including Siena, Juventus, Udinese, Augsburg, and a short-term spell with Liverpool at 39. At Juventus, he filled in for Gianluigi Buffon, making 42 appearances.
During his time at Arsenal, Manninger often served as backup to David Seaman but impressed during key moments, including helping Arsenal defeat West Ham on penalties in the 1997-98 FA Cup and securing a memorable win at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
He was also named Premier League Player of the Month in March 1998.
Arsenal posted on X: “Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper Alex Manninger. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.”
Red Bull Salzburg said it “mourns” the loss of their former goalkeeper.
Liverpool expressed that it was “deeply saddened” by the news.
Juventus stated: “He has left us not only as a great athlete but as a man of rare values: humility, dedication, and extraordinary professionalism. We stand with his family in this moment of grief.”
Manninger’s career spanned Austria, Italy, England, Spain, and Germany, leaving a legacy of professionalism and dedication remembered by fans and peers alike.
