AKURE FLYOVER BRIDGE: EXPERT URGES ALTERNATIVE ROUTES, STREETLIGHTS AS CONSTRUCTION COMMENCES

As construction work officially begins on the flyover bridge project linking Adegbola Junction to the St. Mathias axis in Akure, engineering expert, Engr. Daniel Babafemi Oke, has called on the Ondo State Government to provide additional corridor roads and ensure adequate alternative street lighting along the busy route.

Oke made the appeal while reacting to the commencement of the project, which he described as a laudable infrastructure development capable of transforming transportation and easing traffic congestion within the state capital.

He commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for initiating the project, noting that it reflects a commitment to improving urban mobility and promoting economic growth in Akure.

However, the expert emphasized the need for proactive measures to reduce the impact of construction activities on road users and businesses operating along the corridor.

According to him, the opening of alternative access roads would help divert traffic and prevent avoidable gridlock during the construction period.

“The government should urgently open more feeder and corridor roads to serve as alternative routes. This is very important because the affected axis is a major commercial hub in Akure with heavy daily traffic,” he said.

Oke also raised concern over the removal of existing streetlights along the construction zone, warning that it could expose residents, motorists and traders to safety and security risks, particularly at night.
He urged the state government to install temporary lighting systems to replace those removed due to construction activities.

“As streetlights are being dismantled to allow construction work, it is necessary to provide alternative lighting solutions to ensure safety and security along the corridor. This is a critical business and residential area that requires adequate illumination,” he added.

The engineering expert further appealed to the contractor handling the project to expedite work in order to reduce disruptions and ensure timely delivery of the infrastructure.

He noted that the road serves as a key transportation artery within Akure and plays a significant role in the movement of people, goods and services across the city.

Oke also called on residents, transport unions and business owners to cooperate with construction officials and exercise patience throughout the duration of the project.

“While construction may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits of the project will be substantial. I urge all stakeholders to cooperate fully to ensure smooth and efficient execution,” he said.

He expressed optimism that upon completion, the flyover bridge would significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks, enhance connectivity and contribute to the modernization of Akure as a growing state capital.
