AFCON 2025 Takes Brief Pause to Usher in the New Year

As the world transitions into 2026, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently being hosted in Morocco has taken a brief pause in its match schedule to allow players, officials, and fans across the continent to celebrate the New Year.

CAF confirmed that no matches will be played on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, as part of a planned break to accommodate festivities and ensure safety and recovery time for teams.

The tournament, which has already delivered thrilling group stage encounters, is set to resume on January 2, 2026, with decisive fixtures that could shape the path to the knockout rounds.

Teams and fans have been seen engaging in New Year celebrations across host cities, while coaches are using the brief window for tactical reviews and rest.

CAF also sent a New Year message, thanking Africans for their support and reaffirming its commitment to a successful and entertaining tournament.

The action continues shortly, and all eyes remain on who will lift the coveted AFCON trophy in 2026.
