Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election.

The formal declaration took place on Wednesday in Enugu, where Obi and other political leaders from the South East geopolitical zone gathered to confirm their membership of the ADC.
In his address, Obi described the move as the beginning of a “rescue journey” for Nigeria, expressing hope that the transition into ADC will help mobilize Nigerians toward socio‑economic transformation and democratic integrity as the country heads into the next election cycle.
The event was attended by prominent political figures including former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, and several Senators and federal lawmakers, underscoring the significance of the shift.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election, stated that the decision reflects a broader strategy of opposition unity and collaboration among leaders seeking alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political analysts believe this move could reshape opposition politics and influence strategic alliances as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 polls.
