Nigeria’s national team captain, William Troost-Ekong, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional close to a remarkable 10-year journey with the Super Eagles.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his official Instagram page on Thursday, the 30 year old defender expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria, describing it as the greatest privilege of his life.
“Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter, Troost-Ekong wrote.
Troost-Ekong, who made his debut for Nigeria in 2015, went on to become a cornerstone of the national team’s defence and captained the side in major tournaments, including the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Known for his leadership, composure, and passion, Ekong’s decision marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, as fans and fellow players flooded social media with tributes and memories of his contributions on the pitch.
Though he has stepped away from international duties, Troost-Ekong affirmed his enduring support for the Super Eagles, promising to remain a dedicated ambassador of Nigerian football in his post-playing career.
As Nigeria prepares for future campaigns, Ekong’s legacy as a true leader, patriot, and symbol of consistency will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of Super Eagles stars.
