Akure Odour: Ondo Govt Unravels Mystery, Says Ala River Has No Link

The Ondo State Government has dispelled speculation linking the persistent offensive odour in parts of Akure metropolis to the Ala River, saying preliminary investigations have established that the river is not the source.

The clarification came as the state government intensified efforts to identify what is responsible for the unusual smell that has raised concerns among residents in affected areas.

The Ministry of Environment, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the investigation was ordered by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, who directed a team of environmental professionals to work with consultants to determine the source and nature of the odour.

According to the ministry, preliminary findings indicate that the situation is a case of air pollution resulting from the release of certain organic compounds into the atmosphere.

The government, however, said the investigation remains ongoing, as experts are yet to conclusively identify the specific organic compound or compounds responsible, determine their characteristics and establish the exact source of the emissions.

The clarification effectively puts to rest, at least for now, speculation that the Ala River was responsible for the offensive smell.

While the search for the source continues, the government has advised residents in affected areas to minimise exposure to the odour and use nose masks as a precautionary measure.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and continue their normal daily activities.
The ministry appealed to members of the public to assist authorities by reporting any suspicious environmental activities, particularly illegal waste disposal, unusual emissions and other environmental violations.

Reports and complaints can be made through 08030730479, 08033738102 and 08066144651.

The state government assured residents that it remained fully committed to protecting the environment and safeguarding public health and safety.

It further assured the people that all necessary measures were being taken as investigations continue, while appealing for the cooperation and understanding of residents.

The statement was signed by Henry Johnson Olagundoye of the Ondo State Ministry of Environment and dated August 12, 2026.
