Investigative journalism is a watchdog form of reporting that systematically uncovers concealed truths, systemic corruption, or abuses of power. A civil society organization, Defenders of Civic Rights (DCR), has paid glowing tribute to renowned investigative journalist and broadcaster, Babatunde Bamigboye, popularly known as Omo Edema, describing him as one of the most courageous voices in Nigeria’s media landscape whose relentless pursuit of truth has brought justice, hope and protection to countless ordinary citizens.
The group noted that at a time when many criminal activities remain concealed, vulnerable victims are silenced by fear, and powerful individuals often exploit weaknesses within society, investigative journalism remains one of the most critical pillars for accountability and social justice.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Laide Ojo, DCR said the role played by journalists who dare to confront injustice cannot be overstated, stressing that societies progress when truth is uncovered and wrongdoing is exposed regardless of whose interests are threatened.
According to the group, stories of human trafficking, ritual-related crimes, abuse of power, exploitation, suspicious deaths, and other social injustices often remain hidden from public scrutiny, leaving victims abandoned and perpetrators emboldened by a culture of silence.
“It is within this difficult and often dangerous environment that a few exceptional journalists rise beyond the routine reporting of events to become defenders of truth and champions of justice. Among such individuals stands Babatunde Bamigboye, widely known as Omo Edema, whose career has become synonymous with courage, integrity, and public service.
“For more than two decades, Omo Edema has distinguished himself as one of the most fearless investigative journalists in Southwestern Nigeria. Through painstaking investigations, undercover operations, community intelligence gathering, and persistent field reporting, he has consistently exposed criminal networks, uncovered hidden realities, and amplified the voices of those who would otherwise remain unheard.”
The organization observed that Omo Edema’s distinctive style of investigative broadcasting has earned him widespread respect and admiration across Nigeria, with many media observers drawing comparisons between his work and that of the late legendary crime reporter, Kola Olawuyi, whose fearless journalism left an indelible mark on the profession.
Today, Omo Edema serves as a Director at Mercy-Babs Communications and the Chief Operating Officer of Adamimogo Communications Limited, positions through which he continues to shape public discourse and influence investigative broadcasting.
DCR noted that one of the defining strengths of Omo Edema’s journalism is his ability to communicate complex investigations in the Yoruba language, making critical information accessible to millions of listeners across the Southwest and beyond.
His flagship programmes, “OwayaMi” and “Gongo Nso Pelu Omo Edema,” have become household platforms for exposing human rights violations, investigating suspicious incidents, uncovering fraudulent practices, and bringing neglected societal issues into the national conversation.
The programmes have been aired on several respected radio platforms, including stations within the Adamimogo FM Network, Fresh FM Network, Adaba FM, Voice FM and other regional broadcast outlets. Beyond conventional broadcasting, he has also leveraged digital media through his YouTube and Facebook platforms to engage audiences across Nigeria and the diaspora, expanding the reach and impact of his investigations.
Highlighting some of his notable interventions, DCR referenced the widely publicized Leah Sunday human trafficking case, where Omo Edema’s investigation brought national attention to allegations surrounding the trafficking of a teenage girl to Libya under deceptive circumstances. Through sustained reporting and public engagement, the matter gained visibility and generated widespread calls for accountability.
The group also pointed to his extensive investigation into the controversial death of Police Inspector Yusuf Suleiman Blessing, popularly known as “BS Omo Alhaja,” noting that his independent findings and field reports raised critical questions that attracted public scrutiny and intensified demands for transparency.
Similarly, his investigations into alleged spiritual exploitation and abuses in rural communities, popularly discussed through the Fakuade investigations, helped expose practices that many residents had long endured in silence.
DCR further recalled the personal risks associated with Omo Edema’s profession, including an incident in 2018 during an investigation involving commercial transport operators in Akure, Ondo State, where he was reportedly assaulted and threatened. Rather than retreat, he pursued legal redress and continued his work, reinforcing a reputation built on resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to public interest journalism.
