Aviation Mentorship Gets Boost as Aviators Circle Appoints Aliu Patron

The Aviators Circle has strengthened its drive for mentorship and professional excellence with the appointment of former International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council President, Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, as its Patron.

The development is seen as a major milestone for the organization, which brings together young aviation professionals and enthusiasts across Nigeria’s aviation industry to promote collaboration, leadership, safety standards and career development.

Announcing the appointment, members of the Circle described Dr. Aliu as a globally respected aviation figure whose achievements and international influence would provide invaluable guidance to aspiring professionals in the sector.

Dr. Aliu, an aeronautical engineer with over three decades of experience in civil aviation, has built an illustrious career spanning regulatory administration, policy development and international aviation diplomacy.

A graduate of the Kiev Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers, he obtained a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1983 and later earned a PhD in 1987.

He began his professional career at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Aviation in 1988 as a Senior Airworthiness Surveyor before rising to become Chief Air Transport Officer at the defunct Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA).

His career trajectory later saw him serve as Technical Assistant and Adviser to the Minister of Aviation between 1998 and 1999, after which he became the pioneer Director of Air Transport Regulation at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

In 2005, Dr. Aliu was appointed Nigeria’s representative on the ICAO Council, where he rose to become First Vice-President and chaired several important international aviation committees.

His global stature reached new heights in 2014 when he was elected President of the ICAO Council by acclamation, becoming one of the most influential figures in international civil aviation.

During his tenure from 2014 to 2019, he championed major reforms and initiatives aimed at improving aviation safety, security and environmental sustainability worldwide. These included the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS), the Conflict Zone Information Repository (CZIR), and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

Following his tenure at ICAO, Dr. Aliu founded the International Partners for Aviation Development, Innovation and Sustainability (iPADIS), an NGO dedicated to advancing sustainable aviation growth.
His contributions to global aviation have earned him numerous honours and recognitions, including the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) award conferred by the Nigerian government in 2023.

In recognition of his impact on the industry, Akure Airport and the ICAO Museum in Montreal, Canada, were renamed in his honour.

Observers believe his appointment as Patron of the Aviators Circle will inspire a new era of mentorship, innovation and global networking opportunities for young aviation professionals in Nigeria.
