In a moment of deep pride and national recognition, the Federal Government of Nigeria honoured distinguished aviation pioneers on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, for their immense contributions to the growth and development of the aviation industry in Nigeria.
Among the celebrated honorees was Engr. Obadofin Babatunde, an 83 year old aviation veteran, airworthiness expert, and CEO of Aeroconsult, Nigeria’s first private aviation training school.
The respected icon, whose legacy in the sector remains unmatched, was duly recognised for decades of excellence in aviation safety, regulation, and capacity building.
Although Engr. Obadofin could not attend in person, his son, Obadofin Adeola, proudly received the award on his behalf to a standing ovation.
Engr. Obadofin’s Aeroconsult holds the distinction of being the first privately owned aviation training school in Nigeria, with an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) number 002, second only to the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) Zaria, which holds ATO 001.
His school has produced hundreds of skilled professionals in aircraft maintenance, airworthiness, and flight operations across Africa.
He retired from public service after an illustrious career as Director of Airworthiness at the former Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA), where he was instrumental in setting the regulatory standards for safe aircraft operations in the country.
The Federal Government’s recognition of Engr. Obadofin and other legends was hailed by stakeholders as timely and deserving. Other recipients included aviation trailblazers such as Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, founder of Okada Air; Capt. Dele Ore, a foremost pilot and aviation lawyer; Alhaji Dan Kabo, founder of Kabo Air; Chief Allen Onyema, CEO of Air Peace among others.
The Minister of Aviation, Mr Festors Kayemo in his keynote address, commended the honorees for their life long dedication to safety, innovation, and patriotism in aviation. He noted that their sacrifices and foresight paved the way for a modern, competitive, and globally respected Nigerian aviation industry.
Speaking after receiving the award on behalf of his father, Adeola Obadofin said, “This is a proud moment for our family. My father dedicated his entire life to aviation, mentoring others, and promoting safety. He is deeply honoured by this national recognition.”
The ceremony was not just a celebration of personal achievements, but a reminder of the solid foundation laid by visionaries like Engr. Obadofin Babatunde, foundations that continue to shape the future of aviation in Nigeria and beyond.
Indeed, Obadofin Babatunde remains a towering figure whose legacy will continue to inspire generations in the skies above and the institutions below.
